To raise money for charity, a hundred-year-old woman walks around her garden forty thousand times.

To earn money for charity, a 100-year-old veteran of the Second World War has walked hundreds of miles around his garden. No, you didn’t come onto a four-year-old news article,

Inspired by the global media sensation of the late Captain Tom, who shared on social media that he was doing the same thing in the early days of the pandemic in 2020,

Lance Corporal Harold Jones has been circling his backyard thirty times a day, come rain or shine. He has been doing this since 2020.

As a great-grandfather of six, Corporal Jones began walking his walker around his bungalow like Captain Tom during lockdown.

To date, he has driven 661 miles in it, which is equivalent to 41,550 laps around his garden or roughly the distance between his Birmingham home and the German border.

‘I call myself Lance Corporal Harold all the time. Since Captain Tom was a captain, I figured I’d go to the opposite end of the spectrum,’ the centenarian said.

‘I noticed that Captain Tom had raised money in this way. I assumed I would lose three pals to motor neurone disease,’ he remarked.

In observance of the Captain who captured the hearts of the country, Jones is continuing to log the steps as the two-week anniversary of Captain Tom’s passing draws near.

The energetic retired man believes that his stint in the armed forces, which gave him a ‘high level of endurance,’ is the reason for his continued fitness.

As a non-combat office worker during World War II, Harold was stationed first in India and subsequently in Burma while serving in the British Army from 1942 until 1947.

In less than four years, he has raised over £43,000 for the MND Association since he started his fundraising efforts.

Since then, it has turned into a daily routine. ‘My initial goal was to reach £1,000,’ he clarified.

‘I had no idea how people would react. In a year, I attained a grand. A friend matched my £10,000 when I reached it.

‘I stay in shape because I walk.’ Although I had three broken backs in the past, my ankles, knees, and hips are all flawless.

I walk every morning after breakfast, no matter the weather. You just have to be determined to begin moving,’ Harold remarked. ‘That is really crucial.’

The MND Association nominated him, and the Prime Minister later presented him with a Points of Light award in recognition of his heroic actions.
